How I Reached 500 Followers in 2 Months
If you’re looking to expand your Medium following, you’ve come to the right place. In February, I shared my journey of reaching 100 followers on Medium, and now I’m super HAPPY to tell you how I achieved the 500-follower milestone. Honestly, I did not expect to be writing this post so soon, but here we are!
Let’s take a moment to reflect on my following a year ago:
I experienced a significant boost last year when I published a book review. The post got extra traction after someone with a large following commented and reshared it.
Things remained stable until the end of the year, but when I published my annual book review in January 2024, my reads and views skyrocketed. Although my career articles were popular, particularly among LinkedIn users, most of my Medium followers seem to come from my book reviews.
This observation leads to my first key insight:
1. FIND A NICHE AND COMMIT TO IT
Initially, I wrote about my career, a major focus in my life. However, when friends frequently sought book recommendations, I started curating lists and sharing them on Medium. I never imagined so many people would be interested in my book reviews. Once I recognized the overlap between my passions and what my audience appreciated, I doubled down on providing more engaging content in that area.

2. CHOOSE A TOPIC YOU’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT
Writing, editing, and formatting can sometimes be less than exciting. If you’re serious about growing on Medium and thinking long-term, pick a topic you genuinely enjoy. Passion fuels perseverance, especially on days when motivation is scarce.
3. PUBLISH CONSISTENTLY
Yes, it’s a cliché, but true: consistency is crucial. While some might suggest posting daily, I advocate for a more realistic schedule that you can maintain over time. I started posting once a month and have gradually increased to twice a month — that’s what my schedule allows.
4. INTERACT WITH YOUR AUDIENCE
Engaging with your audience is equally important. I feel honored whenever someone comments on my articles, and I make it a point to show my appreciation by responding and interacting with their profiles.
5. LEVERAGE OTHER PLATFORMS TO AMPLIFY YOUR REACH
Since the beginning, I’ve shared my Medium articles on LinkedIn. Although Medium primarily values interactions within its platform, branching out helped me build initial momentum and continues to support my growth.
