This post is a part of the Google Search Console Feature Engineering Series.

Google Search Console shows only so many metrics, so I’m trying to squeeze all the data I can from them in order to find new insights.

I consider it a useful exercise that stimulates creativity and parallel thinking for SEO. That’s how I came up with the Keyword Coverage metric.

What is SEO Keyword Coverage?

Keyword Coverage is an SEO metric that tells you how many keywords are ranking for a specific page over time.

You can track it for all of your property’s content or for a specific page.

What can we learn from the Keyword Coverage Metric?

The Keyword Coverage can tell us if the amount of newly generated content is bringing in traffic from new keywords.

You can also see if your content ranks for more search terms after an optimization. This is particularly useful for Evergreen Content.

How to get SEO Keyword Coverage Data

In Google Search Console, filter by page and date. Check how many keywords appear for every single date. This can be a tedious task, so I recommend automating it with Python and the Google Search Console API.
