When a friend recommended painting by numbers for some much-needed stress relief, I was admittedly doubtful. I picked up a kit anyway and decided to give it a try. With all the turmoil going on in the world these days, I sure felt like I could use a new distraction.
Since I’m not an artist and don’t own an easel, I decided to paint at my kitchen table. Despite its ordinary function, it’s a space that offers its own kind of comfort. The overhead light cast a clear, focused glow on my canvas. As I took up the brush, I prepared to make what I had initially thought of as a simple child’s activity into a relaxing adult pastime.

With each number, the outside world, with its incessant nagging worries, seemed to slow down, to mute. The simple act of painting became not just therapeutic but almost hypnotic in its nature.
