For part of my life, I was constantly tense — afraid of doing the wrong thing, full of rules for myself and others, and trying hard to please everyone.
I am a Christian and have been most of my life.
No, I’m not blaming Christianity.
I was in leadership for many years, under pressure to always be a good example.
Thankfully, many churches have stopped being so legalistic and demanding.
They still hold to their faith, but the level of condemnation has decreased.
Back then, I had to be a perfect mother, wife and person at all times because “the congregation is watching you.”
Leadership demanded perfection — or the illusion of it.
I was trying to live up to the letter of the law, forgetting that Jesus fulfilled the demands of the law on my behalf because I couldn’t.
