The Secret of Playa Guiones S.1 E2
Narrator: For years, people around the world have been attracted to a remote beach on the Pacific Ocean in Costa Rica named Playa Guiones. People there talk of a strange force that draws them to the water like bees to honey, like burners to Black Rock, like Muslims to Mecca. Our research team headed by Dr. Tyler Travis is investigating the mysterious energy that the locals believe is an energy vortex, a strange force that has attracted a community with alternative lifestyles and exotic rituals. We bring you there to solve the mystery and unlock The Secret of Playa Guiones. (theme music plays)
Tyler: “We’ve taken our electromagnetic sensors to points at the north and south ends of Playa Guiones, with a third reading directly in the middle of the beach. By putting the sensors in large tin cans, we can determine the general direction where the signals are coming from. This allows us to triangulate the source of the electrical anomalies.”
Jenny, facing an array of bleeping and flashing screens: “We were looking out over the surf for the source of electrical activity, but our computer analysis indicates that it’s in the opposite direction, onshore.”
Radar: “But that’s where we would normally detect a steady background pattern of electromagnetic energy associated with the electrical grid. This pattern isn’t steady at all, it seems to be highly unstable.”
Jenny: “Yes, as you can see from this pattern, there are short periods of stable flow, then sharp spikes that are followed by a complete drop to zero. If we increase our sensitivity to cover a larger area, and turn up the volume, we can pick up what sounds strangely like a Reggaeton beat.”
Tyler: “That’s crazy! This whole area sounds like it’s been wired by a cosmic DJ!”
Lights and screens in the control room flicker in an odd pattern, and then all is dark.
Tyler: “Whoa, what just happened?!”
Next Day
Tyler: “Yesterday, we were analyzing very strange electromagnetic energy patterns that appeared to be associated with the electrical grid. Then everything went dark. We have all our sensitive electronics on battery backups, so that should not have happened. But the batteries were mysteriously drained, and there’s no explanation for it. It’s like something just sucked up all the electricity. And we’re not even on the power grid here, we brought our own generators. Something is definitely weird here, and we’re going to get to the bottom of it, even if we have to spend another season here.”
Radar: “A lot of our equipment is fried. We can replace it, but it’s going to take awhile to get it through customs. The camera equipment is functional though, along with our Tri-fields, so some of our work can go on.”
Security Chief Wolf: “I was engaged in perimeter security and I came across a truck and several men wearing yellow shirts bearing an insignia with the letters I C E. They were using a cherry picker to inspect the electrical lines, as far as I could tell. I attempted to engage them with my limited Spanish but they ignored me. Something about them was very odd, they seemed a bit robot-like.”
Tyler: “That is strange. Take us to the spot where you encountered the truck and we’ll see if we can get any readings from our Tri-fields.”
The History Channel team walked down a severely rutted road, with Wolf in the lead.
Wolf: “Hey, what the Hell is that?” He ran ahead to what appeared to be a dark lump on the ground. “This is a dead monkey!” The others gathered around for a closer look. “From the looks of it, it suffered severe burns. There’s nothing around here that could cause burns like this. This is completely unnatural.”
Tyler: “Let’s take some readings. Radar, are you picking up anything?”
Radar: “I am picking up some high levels of microwave radiation. These levels are approaching the ionization range. We need to get out of here before we get cooked.”
Back at Base
Radar: “This place is off the charts! The power grid is buzzing like a dance beat and now we can’t connect to the internet either. Some strange electrical force fried half of our technical equipment and then we found a monkey that looked like it had self-combusted.”
Tyler: “It’s crazy. At least our cameras are still working. Let’s try to get a good night’s rest and we’ll go out tomorrow and talk to some of the local people. Let’s see if we can get any useful information about what’s going on here.”
