It is a short grain, white, aromatic, sticky rice having a sweet buttery flavor. It derives its name from its usage as the principal ingredient in the preparation of the offerings to Govindaji, the family deity of the Setts of Kolkata.

The word Govindobhog thus literally translates to offerings to Gobindo (or Govinda). However the rice is offered to deities on all major festivals.

This rice was used as ‘bhog’ (offering) for the Hindu deities, hence the name Govindbhog.

Setting it apart

This staple comes with a superior fragrance, making it the ideal choice for special delicacies. Short and white in colour, it also has the unique quality of retaining its aroma and buttery flavour around the year.

Cultivation and Production

Govindbhog, which is a Kharif crop sown in July and harvested in December (145–150 days duration) . It doesnt have too much pest problems, but is suspetible to diseases in the initial days and as is the case with aromatic rices , it is low yielding . It is one of the most popular aromatic rices.

Growing Field of Govindbhog Rice in Maharashtra :

Shirala Tahasil in Sangli District of Maharashtra is well- Known for rice cultivation. About 45 rice varieties are cultivated in different localities of Shirala tahasil. The tehsil has large area under thick forests due to heavy monsoon rains.

Taluka Shirala (also called Nagbhumi), which is located in Western Ghat, near Chandoli Forest and Warana Vasant Sagar Dam.
