Run for the Shadows
A rattlesnake shimmies under a nearby rock as the electric shuttle-train decelerates along the monorail. The single rail-car is an air-conditioned bubble amid 40 degrees of desert heat.
“This is it, Mr President,” says Moreton. “Sorry we’ll have to back off to the chopper pad shortly after it begins. You’ll see why soon enough.”
“Sure. I just hope this proves to be worth five hundred billion. That’s a lot of tax dollars for a schoolboy experiment in the Nevada Desert!”
Moreton chuckles.
The bodyguard raises a hand.
“Hold up, Professor,” he says.
“Back off, Pete,” says the president.
“You won’t be disappointed,” gushes Moreton. “Seeing the first stage from ground level is … really special. What you’re about to witness is the future of macro-engineering.”
“Using nano-bots,” says the bodyguard.
