Advertising has long been a game of finding and reaching the right and precise target audience. In days before the internet, advertisers only had to their disposal the nature of a television channel or newspaper to make a judgment on their ad placement decisions. With the advent of the internet, advertisers gained the ability to target their potential customers more precisely. Ever since this trend of enhancing advertising Return on Investment by hyper-targeting potential customers has continued with new-age social media and search engines collecting more and more data from its ever-growing users. However, limitations remained. Like in the case of location-based targeting, most advertising platforms were able to segment users by city or region they belong to but have been unable to provide further break downs. Unable, until Now!

A bold new project, Stackcity aiming to decentralize the Wifi ecosystem, now enables enterprises to pick precise micro-locations for the release of their ads. The project provides Stack Routers with WiFi connections and bandwidth to human-centric businesses and public spaces to create WiFi hotspots. Each of these WiFi hotspots acts as a standalone device allowing advertisers to choose one or more devices independently for the release of their messages with absolute precision on the target WiFi hotspot.

This Smart WiFi AD System is designed to create a WiFi ecosystem that is able to provide free access to the internet to the general public. Business Owners or Individuals can invest in installing the Stacks Routers. Once the setup of these routers is complete, a WiFi hotspot will be launched, and it becomes easily manageable from Stackscity’s official website. Advertisers can now select this WiFi hotspot to display their ads and engage in bidding for the right to advertise. Naturally, a WiFi AD bidding system is used where advertisers compete for the WiFi AD billboard on their selected WiFi hotspot. The Ads are then displayed based on the advertisers’ bid rank. The Advertisers also retain complete freedom to define their total campaign budget as well as specific asset display price. Data on ad displays and user behavior are gathered and provided using which advertisers can make their bid strategies. Given the sensitive nature of this user behavior data and location data gathered for precision targeting by Stacks Routers, it was important for Stackcity to make sure this data remains safe and absolutely secure. Thus, cutting edge blockchain technology has been used. Blockchains are basically decentralized peer-to-peer networks and have no singular point of failure and access point for hackers, making any foul play impossible. The use of blockchain as the base technology provides trustworthy service to users of Stackcity (both router owners and advertisers) and creates a level of unprecedented transparency. This technology will also go a long way to fight fraud that is rampant in the digital and mobile advertising industry currently. According to a 2016 report, the ad fraud botnet “Chameleon” costs advertisers over 6 million dollars a month. Another study by The Verge in 2017found that 1 in every 5 ad-serving website is visited exclusively by fraud bots. Moreover, marketers lost a whopping 7.2 billion dollars to digital ad fraud, according to another report by WhiteOps. Such reports are fast becoming increasingly common in the digital advertising industry. Thus, in this climate, the use of blockchain attempts to restore trust in digital advertising by securing against such common fraud practices.

Have you ever been hit by digital ad fraud? Have fraud bots ruined your campaigns leading to unwarranted loss of campaign budget? What effects do you think such disruptive micro-locations targeting feature will have on the digital ads industry? Let us know in the comments below.
