Today’s Reading: from the last paragraph of p. 472 to p.474.

One of the posters next to my desk is a quote from Steps to Christ p. 83. In the context of people worried about their success in life, Ellen says:

They have only to go forward quietly, doing faithfully the work that God’s providence assigns, and their life will not be in vain.

I love the simplicity, we ONLY have to do one thing, “the duty that lies nearest”, and our life will be effective, potent, powerful, real, valid, valuable and worthwhile (antonyms to “in vain”).

Key word

  • Duty

Questions

  • For us, God is described as having choices, duties, reasons and plans. Do you honestly believe your choices, reasons and plans could be better?
  • What is the one thing of which we may be assured?
  • If He refuses our desires, what does God then give us?
  • “The duty that lies nearest” and “homely but sacred duties that lie next us” are to be accepted as God’s choice for what reason?
  • “Often our plans fail that God’s plans for us may succeed.” “…seemingly unanswered prayers and disappointed hopes” are among our greatest blessings. How does this help you face setbacks?
  • Which do you need most to learn; faith, meekness, patience, humility, self-forgetfulness?
