The first part of my trip to Lacock can be found here.

Remarkable in its antiquity and originality, Lacock Abbey provided its walls for scenes from the absolutely iconic and magical fairy tale movie about Harry Potter.

But even if there wasn’t this particular reason to visit this abbey, there are a whole bunch of other reasons to visit these ancient walls, for they are full of history and intrigue.

One of the oldest rooms in the abbey. Photo from personal archive

The walls and ceiling from the oldest part are about 800 years old, and they are perfectly preserved.

Shall we take a look inside the old convent?

The figures are so entertaining that we spent about half an hour looking at them alone.

Deathly figures in the abbey? Normal business.

Very beautiful and unusual! Photo from personal archive

Oh, and what is this horned beast? and what’s that on its nose?

Sugar is real. Photo from personal archive

Why it is a sugar lump of course! But why is it there? Luckily there was a sign explaining that:

In 1919, an American student jokingly left a piece of sugar on the nose of a goat. And Matilda Talbot, (the Talbot family, the last owners of the residence, before it was acquired by the National Trust) liked this joke so much that sugar is now regularly updated.

My dears, do you carry sugar in your pockets? No? And in vain! Well perhaps I will carry a couple of pieces, just in case)).

In the 16th century, when King Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries, the abbey was bought and transformed into a family home.

And very, so many books in every room!

My dears, I have already said the name Talbot several times, are there any associations or is there something like this spinning in the memory? Well, of course, the very first photograph! As in 1835, on a hot August day, William Henry Fox Talbot, the owner of the residence, created the very first photographic negative.

A tiny negative, no bigger than a postage stamp, of its window. Photo from personal archive

Yes, the most important artifact of photography was created in this very room.

We will soon have 200 years of photography!

Well, Lacock, a wonderful popular place from the 13th century, starting with the abbess of royal blood, and ending with the cradle of photography and shooting stunning films: Pride and Prejudice, Moll Flanders, The Other Boleyn, and of course Harry Potter, strongly invites you to visit!

Well, I guess I’ll definitely be back!
