In a recent statement, the COP28 President-Designate expressed support for the UN Secretary-General’s call for climate solidarity and acceleration. This comes in the wake of the latest report released by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which outlines the urgent need for transformational progress in the next seven years.

The IPCC report highlights the dire consequences of inaction on climate change, including rising sea levels, more frequent and severe weather events, and irreparable damage to ecosystems. It underscores the need for immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit the worst impacts of climate change.

To achieve this, smart policies must be adopted by governments to drive transformational progress. It is no longer sufficient to rely on incremental changes; bold and decisive action is required to create a sustainable future. The next seven years are critical, and we must work together to make tangible progress towards a better world.

A business mindset can be a powerful tool for driving change, but it must be injected with short-term key performance indicators (KPIs) and an action-oriented agenda. We cannot afford to delay or make incremental changes. We must prioritize tangible results that make a real difference in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the effects of climate change.

Building a new energy system and reducing emissions must be a top priority. We cannot simply unplug the current energy system without first putting in place a sustainable alternative. The transition to a new energy system must be carefully planned and executed to avoid disruptions and ensure a smooth transition.

Over all, the COP28 President-Designate’s support for the UN Secretary-General’s call for climate solidarity and acceleration is a step in the right direction. The IPCC report underscores the need for urgent action to mitigate the effects of climate change. It is up to governments, businesses, and individuals to work together to drive transformational progress towards a more sustainable future.
