So the kids have grown a bit since I listed some apps for preschoolers a couple years back. Here’s a new list targeted more at kids aged 5–7 or so — yes, that’s how old my two are now. Same rules apply: no ads, and no in-app purchases, unless it’s a one-off allowing you to try the app before paying for the full version. Will list app publishers as they often have more than one good app. And, by the way, many of these games can also be fun for adults…

  1. Martin Magni (www.martinmagni.com)
Most played: Odd Bot Out and Mekorama. Special shout out to this guy (I think it’s just one guy), my daughter has spent hours building crazy vehicles with the blocks available at the end of Odd Bot Out.
  2. Amanita Design (amanita-design.net)
Most played: Machinarium, Samorost 3 and Botanicula.
  3. DragonBox (dragonbox.com)
Most played: Magnus’ Kingdom of Chess, Algebra 5+, Elements. Yes, these guys were also on the preschool list, they do great educational apps.
  4. ustwo games (www.ustwogames.co.uk)
Most played: Monument Valley and Monument Valley 2.
  5. 2DBOY (2dboy.com)
One great game, World of Goo — Android and iOS (those links are hard to spot on their site).
  6. LightBot (lightbot.com)
Most played: LightBot, a great introduction to programming. Their new SpriteBox Coding app also looks good, but not tried it yet.
  7. Science Museum Group (learning-resources.sciencemuseum.org.uk)
Most played: Transmission. Also keen to see what the kids think of Rugged Rovers now that I’ve spotted it.
  8. Mediocre (www.mediocre.se)
    Most played: PinOut
  9. BBC’s CBeebies Apps
  10. Google’s Toontasic 3D and Verne: The Himalayas

Some individual games also worth checking out: The Unstoppables, Zenge, Tiny Bubbles & Maestria.

Also, some of the apps from the preschool list have enduring appeal, especially Inventioneers, Toca Blocks, and the Avokiddo Thinkrolls games.

I hope those are some helpful pointers to apps your kids will enjoy!

Update: check out Apps for Tweens.
