Grandeln are the canine teeth found in the upper jaw of red deer, which are often collected by hunters. These teeth are unique to certain species of deer, such as the European red deer (Cervus elaphus), and are typically absent in most ruminants, where a plate is found instead. In German-speaking regions, these teeth are sometimes referred to as “Austrian ivory” due to their resemblance to ivory and their historical use in craftsmanship and decorative purposes.

The tradition of using Grandeln in jewelry dates back to the Paleolithic era, and they continue to be used in modern times to create various types of jewelry, such as pendants, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. The jewelry made from Grandeln often has a rustic appearance and natural aesthetic and is frequently worn by people who typically wear Alpine attire (such as Ledehosen and Dirndl).

The tradition of wearing jewelry made from Grandeln, or deer teeth, in the Alpine regions has historical and cultural roots. In the 19th century, such jewelry was incredibly popular, especially as hunting trophies. The teeth, known as Hirschgrandln, were often brought home by hunters and set into silver or other materials to be worn or displayed. The jeweler associated with these types of jewellery is commonly referred to as Jagdjuwelier.

This practice reflects a deep connection with nature and the tradition of hunting. It’s a way to honor the animal and the skill of the hunter. Additionally, these pieces serve as a personal memento of the hunt and are often passed down through generations, becoming family heirlooms.

Typically the Grandeln can be set into a Jagdabzeichen:

…or be worked into a necklace that can be worn around the neck:

The use of Grandeln in jewelry is also tied to the rich history of Alpine craftsmanship and design. Austria, particularly the city of Vienna, has a long-standing reputation for exquisite jewelry making, dating back to the medieval period.

Today, Grandel jewelry continues to be a unique trend seen in Austrian, German and Swiss heritage, blending these countries rich history of skilled craftsmanship with their cultural traditions. The jewelry pieces mentioned are not only accessories but also carry cultural significance and a touch of personal achievement for those who wear them.
