This is the second in a series of recaps I’ll be posting for the final season of Game of Thrones based on work I’ve described in “The Ultimate Game of Thrones Dataset”, “32 Game of Thrones Data Visualizations”, and “19 More Game of Thrones Data Visualizations.

Arya and Gendry have sex? Daenerys knows about Jon/Aegon now? and Brienne is a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?! Read on for a data-driven recap of the second episode of Game of Thrones’ Season 8, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”.

If you want to see these visualizations for past episodes, you can check out any episode here. And if you want to see/play with the dataset, it’s on github.

About that sex scene…

Now that Arya and Gendry had their moment, she’s now on the “who’s slept with whom?” visualization in a weird cluster: Arya had sex with Gendry (to know what it’s like) who had sex with Melisandre (to bloody up some leeches) who had sex with Stannis Baratheon (to make that shadow baby).

When are characters on screen?

This visualization hits the proverbial nail on the head. It’s clear to see when the Avengers-style “everyone is in the room” scenes are happening, and when the conference breakouts are going on in the run up to the final three-horn blow announcing the Battle of Winterfell.

For how long are characters on screen?

It was a bit surprising to see Jaime atop the list here, but I guess he was (a) new to the mix, (b) had some atoning to do with Bran, and (c) had bonding time with his brother Tyrion and the rest of the crew.

It’s also curious that Podrick is so far down the list despite his epic rendition of “Jenny’s Song”.

Which locations are on screen?

We hadn’t seen another episode yet that (nearly) completely took place in the same location. Aside from the foreboding White Walker cavalry line-up, the whole episode was at Winterfell.

How long is spent in each region?

This could be the most interesting least interesting visualization to come from this whole thing. It’s rare for an episode to take place in so few regions. Only “Blackwater” (Season 2, Episode 9) has also taken place in only 1 region.

How long is spent in each location?

Just about the whole episode was at Winterfell. Makes sense.

What’s the distribution of locations?

Another interestingly not-so-interesting one. The North is shown in light blue.

How many words does each character speak?

Daenerys had more say in this episode (630 words) than in the previous episode (176 words), but I suppose she’s being queenly and working all the angles.

How many languages are spoken?

Only the one this episode: the Common Tongue.

What’s the gender balance on screen?

I would have thought the conversation between Daenerys and Sansa would have tilted things more to the female side, but there were many group conversations (with more males present) to tip in favor of the “More Male” light blue bar.

What’s the gender balance of words spoken?

Nearly 2:1.

For how long is each House on screen?

Ok, so Houses Tully, Frey, Martell, and Tyrell are all still dead. And I’m still not counting Gendry as House Baratheon even though he let Arya know he’s Robert Baratheon’s bastard son.

But it’s nice to see Theon representing the Greyjoys at Winterfell again.

Which locations are in the opening sequence?

This was the second episode in the entire series where the starting location of the opening sequence was not King’s Landing; I imagine we can expect more of the same from the rest of the final season.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this data-driven description of the episode. Let me know if there are other visualizations you think ought to be included or other data that could be collected in general?

Thanks for reading!
