Cupertino/Budapest, June 5th, 2023 — Tim Cook is bringing Apple into the realm of augmented reality. With the newly announced Vision Pro device at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple (once again) is creating a new segment that will determine the future of the Internet.

“The same way that Mac introduced us to personal computing, and iPhone introduced us to mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro will introduce us to spatial computing. This marks the beginning of a journey that will bring a new dimension to powerful, personal technology” — said #Apple CEO Tim Cook at the launch.

Sure it will. For whenever Apple enters a market, it changes its entire ecosystem. When the iPod was launched in 2001, it changed not only the portable music player market but the music industry. 2007, iPhone? No explanations needed. The iPad in 2010 created a new product category between smartphones and laptops, and although there were pretty good players in the market already, Apple’s brand name has helped the Apple Watch stand out and become a leader in that field. Not to mention the AirPod, a device that made us realise we don’t even need wires.

The end of the smartphone era

Today’s announcement foreshadows yet another shift in technology: moving away from flatscreens (a.k.a. mobile phones) and changing to another device: XR glasses. This really is the end of the smartphone era. “The Vision Pro is the first device in this post-smartphone era that will determine the future of the Internet. This is the iPhone moment of our times“ — explained Udeme Etentuk, founder/CEO of AR Analytics, a research&deeptech startup that specializes in developing extended reality (XR) and AI solutions for product companies. “With this new device, the world is ready to go spatial. It will change how we will interact with our devices and with each other; ultimately it will change the world we live in. It will also bring a shift in how brands and companies will communicate and market their products.”

What it means for markets

Each new product contributed to Apple’s growth and success, driving increased revenue and market capitalization. Apple’s success and the popularity of its hardware products have led to job creation and economic growth both within the company and across its supply chain. The ecosystem surrounding these products, including developers, accessory manufacturers, retailers and service providers, has also contributed to economic activity and employment and, ultimately, the change in market behaviour.

Vision Pro is an interface for generative AI

What the announcement also means is what we have already declared: there’s no such thing as a metaverse. After this launch, the way we will interact with our devices will change. Tech companies enter web3 because they need a new platform for new marketability. Many industries will be able to use it to either reduce emissions or by shortening and simplifying the design, the prototyping or the production itself. What will be needed from now on is to have spatial assets in a spatial environment, and today companies will frantically start developing tools for those environments. This is exactly the focus of our scientific and research cooperation with prestigious institutions where our technology and interaction design is tested and refined.

The future is spatial. Join in…?
