Karbo Com Highlights

October was a busy month for Karbo Communications. We launched our new PowerStart program, celebrated three birthdays, saw “Steve Jobs” in theaters and still managed to find time for company outing to high tea in the city .

PowerStart: On October 8, we announced the PowerStart PR Launch Program created for pre-Series A technology companies. The program is offered via a tiered pricing structure and allows startups to work with a highly successful PR team to enter a market with impact and increase visibility.

PowerStart gives startups that lack the financial resources for extensive and ongoing PR programs the opportunity to break through the increasingly crowded tech market ecosystem.

We had a belated birthday celebration for Cameron Smead, senior account director, at MoMos (pictured left). A few weeks later we had a delicious luncheon at 21st Amendment Brewery to celebrate the birthdays of Julie Karbo, founder & CEO, and Sweety Ghuman, account executive.

For our Fall quarterly outing, we dressed up and ventured to San Francisco’s Dartealing Lounge for high tea and finger sandwiches (pictured left). Cheers to a great team and a great quarter!

The Karbo Com leadership team surprised the company with an afternoon movie outing to see “Steve Jobs” in theaters (pictured right). Our vice president, Margaret, came in costume and all.

October was a busy month for Cameron as well. She and her boyfriend of over 10 years, Dustin, traveled to Maui, Hawaii to celebrate her birthday and cheered on the San Francisco 49ers against the Baltimore Ravens this past weekend (pictured below).

Q: What is one thing you would change about PR?

A: The negative stereotypes. Just like anything else there are those few people who “ruin it” for everyone and I feel that way about PR. The majority of PR pros work hard, do their research on the best reporters to contact, and craft a compelling and strategic pitch. However, there’s much more “noise” about the few who do not take this approach and that’s unfortunate.

Q: What sparked your interest in a PR career?

A: My mom always told me that I would work for the National Enquirer one day because I asked so many questions and had to know everything before everyone else. My first full sentence was even a question. Ever since then I studied journalism and took as many writing classes as I could with the goal to be a magazine journalist one day. I later realized I wanted the freedom to be more creative.

At the same time, my boyfriend’s cousin lived in LA and worked in a hospitality PR firm. She came to visit us in San Diego one weekend and when I found out she got to try new restaurants and bars for work and help them with their menu, social media, and events I said, “You can get paid for that?? Sign me up!” Once I entered the field I quickly realized hospitality wasn’t the best fit for me so I found my way to tech. It turns out it’s much more fun to get paid to work with the technology and companies who are changing the world as we know it :) Plus, I still get to know things before the rest of the world so it’s a perfect fit.

Q: What is your least favorite word?

A: Moist. It’s just weird. Luckily we don’t use that adjective in technology.

Q: Name three people you would love to invite to dinner.

A: My grandmother, Ann Smead, Mariska Hargitay, and Sheryl Sandberg. Because #fiercefemales.

Q: Tell us something we wouldn’t know about you.

A: After I graduated college I backpacked across Europe with three friends and visited 11 countries in 5 weeks. When I was in Switzerland I went canyoning through the Swiss Alps (Google it) and then bungee jumped off of a gondola over a lake. It was definitely out of character for me, but the coolest thing I’ve ever experienced.

Client Highlights

Real-Time Innovations (RTI), the Industrial Internet of Things connectivity platform company, hosted their annual London Connext Conference this month on Oct. 14–15. The conference is the world’s largest gathering of technical software developers, designers and decision makers dedicated to building intelligent systems using DDS and the Connext® family of products.

The company also participated in NIDays 2015, and Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) meetup and Smart Industry, among other industry conferences.

Recently, RTI announced the first DO-178C certification data package for its safety-critical connectivity platform. While the announcement was particularly significant in aviation and military verticals, the package also directly impacts companies that are leveraging drone or Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) technologies but were hindered by the strict regulations of these aviation authorities. Karbo Com assisted in this messaging and worked with RTI to develop a launch plan for the product. The agency pursued an aggressive outreach strategy and secured placements in top-tier vertical trade press.
