After this article on a painting I created using DALL-E, several of you were curious about what DALL-E is and how I came about to paint with it.

This video does a great job in describing the core idea behind DALL-E. Using innovations in deep-learning made at OpenAI, DALL-E helps create images and paintings from natural text strings.

The main prompts that went into creating the painting were the style of the artist, colors I wished to see in the painting, and a definition of ideas I wanted to represent.

Prompts for the artist style included: Jackson Pollock, Cubist, oil painting. Prompts for color included: bright, orange, teal and vibrant. Prompts for the ideas included: Yin-Yang drawn in fractal style, Human figure balancing a barbell, Big bang , Cubist interpretation of a lotus

I found the newly introduced concept of outpainting very useful in generating a painting that was large enough (about 5ft*4ft) and at a resolution to be printed and framed as a painting.

Below are a few iterations of similar ideas and other paintings I created in the process before arriving at the one which finally adorns the walls. I’d played around with names of different artists such as Mark Rothko, Gustav Klimt etc in these iterations
