Design Thinking and Lean Startup are distinct yet complementary approaches to innovation.
💡Design Thinking focuses on creative problem-solving that’s centred around human needs. It follows a five-step approach of empathising, defining, ideating, prototyping, and testing, emphasising the generation of diverse ideas that cater to people’s needs.
👉Lean Startup methodology is hypothesis-driven and emphasises customer feedback and iteration through a four-step process: build, measure, learn, and repeat. It takes the idea that you should start with a minimum viable product (MVP) and then iterate on it based on customer feedback.
By combining both approaches, businesses can significantly benefit. For instance, a financial services company creating a mobile banking app can use design thinking to identify customer needs and problems to solve, like simplifying transactions. Then, by applying lean startup principles, they can develop and test the MVP, refine them based on feedback, and increase the chances of meeting customers’ needs and achieving market success.
