You get the words “token sale” and “ICO” used interchangeably consistently by the media. For example, the Tripterium ICO starts 15th June, or the Tripterium token sale starts 15th June. Are they really the same thing?
First we need to understand the difference between a token, a coin and an ICO.
What is a coin in the cryptocurrency world?
A coin is a unit of value native to a blockchain. It is a means of exchange within the blockchain to incentivize the network of participants to use the blockchain. An examples of a cryptocurrency that uses a coin is Bitcoin. The sole purpose of a coin is to exchange value.
What is a token in the cryptocurrency world?
Unlike a coin, a token has additional functionality. The developer can design the token to represent any asset or functionality. The most common tokens are created on the Ethereum platform using the ERC20 standard to create smart contracts, which contain the rules that the token will follow. The Tripterium T50 token is a good example.
What is an ICO or token sale in the cryptocurrency world?
An ICO, otherwise called a “token sale” or “token launch,” is where a company is creating a new product or service, and wants to build an ecosystem of stakeholders upfront who will benefit from purchasing the token early.
Is a Token Sale or ICO the same?
It is an exciting time for projects and companies to launch and grow using this new funding mechanism supported by blockchain technology.
