Pennsylvania Railroad Oct 8, 1938 Grandfather Letters 3 of 46 Minneapolis
Letter Postmarked: Oct 8, 1938
From: the Sheridan Hotel, Marquette at Eleventh, Minneapolis.
To: Miss Betty Hodgson 6034 Walton St. Phila, Pa

Dear Betty:
I just received a telegram from Mr. Barriger. He wants Walter Wright & I to go to Chicago & meet him at the Chicago Club on Saturday night. Sunday morning the 3 of us will leave Chicago at 9:30AM on a Santa Fe train for Kansas City, arriving at the latter place at 5PM. At 5:45 PM we will take a train from Kansas City and arrive in Minneapolis at 7:50AM Monday. The train ride from Minneapolis to Chicago takes 7 hours so you can see that I will spend the entire week-end on trains. Mr. Barriger is making an inspection of the Santa Fe & I guess he just wants us along for company. Everyone in Washington says that if you want to see the U.S. you have the join the Railway Division. I am beginning to believe there is a lot of truth in that statement. Before I leave this job I should have a pretty good idea of what this country looks like.
[My notes: for eight years from 1933 to 1941 Barringer worked in federal service as the railroad chief of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation.]
I was very much surprised to hear of Alexander’s decision to go to Hartford & look for a job. Mr. Barriger offered Pearce a job in Seattle, Wash. But Pearce said he would first have to talk it over with his wife. Evidently Evelyn said no. I think he is very foolish to turn down two jobs to take a chance on getting a job in Hartford.
I was expecting to see the Minnesota — Purdue game tomorrow but that is out. I guess it is just as well because I’ll always have a chance to see a football game but the chance to travel isn’t offered very often.
I was very glad to receive your second letter so promptly. It’s great to hear from you!
I’ll write & tell you all about my trip on Monday. I wish you could make the trip because I think you would enjoy it.
With all my love,
Fritz
