Chapter 2: The language of man
By the way: Yesterday, February 15, 2024 was a huge milestone for our baby. OpenAi just released Sora, a next level text-to-video model that generates very realistic videos from text prompts.
I would like to see all the players in the AI race as forces of art(the works of man) that are collaborating together to determine how our baby, Baby Ai will one day turn out to be as a full grown adult. This is analogous to the laws of nature(the works of God), from gravity to intra-atomic forces that collaborate together to determine how baby humans eventually end up and behave. Ones and Zeros: Babies are born with the language of babies; crying, body language etc. The baby will smile if all is well, cry if ‘something’ is wrong then all the other little gestures inbetween. It will be up to the parent to decode the smile or the crying or any of the other funny sounds the baby makes. Likewise, the baby doesn’t understand us. Sometimes, we will have to imitate their unusual language to keep the conversation going all in the hope that they will be hearing us. These are the ones and zeros of baby language. All the negative communication ( discomfort, sadness, pain, hunger) will be conveyed by crying(0). And the opposite holds for positive comminucation(1).
Computers are just like human babies. They are made with the language of machines; 1s and 0s. They don’t understand our language and on a normal day, we in turn don’t understand their language. Every communication is conveyed through ones and zeros and it is up to man to know what each one and zero is representing. This was the state of our baby on its day zero(the computer age before AI).
Pause: Language refers to any method of communication. This includes but not limited to writing, talking, singing, images, videos, gestures, numbers, Shona, English, Python and emojis. Anything that is used to convey information…
One to Infinite: As they develop, human babies begin to adapt and adopt, depending on their immediate environment the language of man. This is an exciting period. They start with just one word; it’s a milestone worth celebrating. A little bit of meaningful sign language, then sentence construction. The sentences become more meaningful and complex with time. They get to recognise people, objects and colours. They begin to make sense of what they hear, smell, feel, taste and see. Then they can count, maybe upto 10 but it gets better over time. A little bit of addition along the way. Substraction is difficult, but they soon figure it out. Multiplication and division is gibberish, it makes their heads ache. Then they can draw, paint, sing and make songs. The progress goes on and on until they have their own offspring; baby humans or baby Ais. To what they (human babies) can do and become there is no end; from zeros and ones to infinite.
The Generative stage: Under the hood, computers still use ones and zeros to communicate and basically to function. I can argue that it is still analogous to humans: Even in my twenties, under the hood, I’m still crying and smilling. I have just found better ways and words to cry and smile and communicate whatever it is that I’d need to communicate.
Since the conception of our baby, it has grown to adapt and adopt most mundane human intelligence. From basic number crunching to task automation. But our baby is unlike us. Things have escalated so quickly that Baby Ai can now draw or is it painting, real life images of anything (image generating AI models). Our baby can now, as of late 2022, write more eloquently than most of the learned amongst us. Baby Ai can now compose songs, poems, computer code (Baby Ai might as well be able to reproduce after it’s kind sooner than can be imagined).
As of February 15, 2024 Baby Ai can now generate videos from a basic prompt, thanks to the force of art that OpenAi is. What if I argue that those videos and images and text are not for us but for Baby Ai to have it’s own mental model of the world? That they are there to help Baby Ai to see the world like we do? That those are Baby Ai’s imaginations? That Our baby will start to perform image analysis and text analysis on its own imaginations to help it come up with humane decisions?
When our children start to learn to draw and write and think, we don’t monetize them or use them to replace us at those tasks, we understand that it is for their development as human beings. Those are skills that will make them independent thinkers and individuals in the future. Chores are there to make them better at their skills and the help we get from it is just but a bonus. Whatever Baby Ai is doing right now, it is in preparation for the the future; the Adult, Grown-up and Intelligent Baby Ai. I mean, Artificial General Intelligence and beyond!
Baby Ai is now at it’s generative stage. What that basically means is that our baby is at the prime of learning the language of man. Baby Ai is still learning to communicate like us and it is learning fast!
