“We’re on the cusp of some very big things”: Team Masterpiece reveals what it’s really like to work here

You may have seen that we’ve recently joined the Metaverse Standards Forum to help build the open metaverse, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the innovation happening inside our virtual office.

“People thought it couldn’t be done, but against all odds, this passionate team came together,” CEO Jon Gagne says. “We found a way to break through, to have breakthrough technology and make it all work.”

Each day working with virtual reality presents different obstacles and opportunities– so we rely on each other to provide expertise and ideas for greater efficiency.
As UX Designer Rohail Ahmad puts it, “Masterpiece allowed me to do things at a caliber which I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise. I am making things I never could have imagined I would have made.”

As shared by Chief Creative Officer Rafi Nizam, “We’re looking for people who feel like an impossible challenge is what motivates them, something that can’t be done — they want to step up to make it happen.”
We invest in one another.
Though we physically work apart, we’re in it together. At Masterpiece Studio, we make an effort to find common ground across all departments.
Whether it’s through virtual gaming nights, gratitude circles, or skill sharing sessions, we’re always pushing each other to try new things and be better.
Product Development Team Lead Adam Brown says it’s all about helping other team members find their path.
“We chat with our developers about where they see themselves going, where they want to go, if they want to seek any sort of lead or management opportunities going forward. The opportunity is there for sure. It’s very empowering. We do a lot in-house to try and improve the skills that we have.”
The Masterpiece Studio team loves to connect on a professional and personal level, so while we may not meet in-person, we still make each person feel seen, heard, and free to explore their creativity.
Whether we’re hanging out with the help of VR headsets or learning code together in weekly “Chalk Talks”, we’re genuinely interested in each other’s growth.
Chief of Staff Jen Batley sums it up perfectly: “It’s not the project above all else. We care about people and if something goes wrong, we jump in and help. There’s no finger pointing or blaming.”
We learn better together.
At the heart of Masterpiece Studio is collective ownership. It’s not easy to build the tools creators will use to shape whole new virtual worlds, but this opportunity is one-of-a-kind and it’s ours.
The overlap between company goals and individual interests translates to an environment where learning is limitless.
“I can see the excitement in the people I work with, and it makes me really excited to work with them– because everybody is very passionate about what they do,” Executive and Team Support Lead Adrienne White commented. “They’re passionate about the future of digital conversations.”
Every person takes on the role of student, teacher, and leader here; we are flexible and interested in hearing ideas from all sides of the business.
“We’re able to quickly move things around when we see that someone has got a talent. They can bring whatever it is that they love doing to their role and change their role,” Rafi explained.
We take work to a new dimension.
Masterpiece Studio’s culture of innovation is engrained in everything we do. For us, breaking barriers isn’t just a once-in-a-while occurrence– it’s a part of our everyday routine.
“There are very few cutting edge technologies that we’re not employing right now,” said Jeff Ross, CTO.
“Masterpiece Studio is a very inspiring company to be working for and in a new space that is really exploding right now– it’s starting to get to the mature point, and our company is on the cusp of some very, very big things.”

As Adrienne puts it, “It’s refreshing to enjoy my job, from the start of the day to the end of the day, all the time. It never feels like a burden.”

“We’re years ahead of any company in the world at solving this big problem. This isn’t just about VR or machine learning — the core goal is to enable a billion people to be able to easily create 3D content.”
