NLDS Game 2: Ninth Inning

Cody Bellinger’s remarkable catch, saving two runs in the seventh inning by robbing Fernando Tatis Jr. of a home run, is the memorable play in National League Division Series Game 2. But there was another game-saver from that Oct. 7 game against the Padres.

The Dodgers led 6–3 heading to the ninth inning. San Diego scored twice on Kenley Jansen, cutting the lead to 6–5. With two outs and a runner on first base, the Dodgers turned to Joe Kelly.

Kelly walked Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado, loading the bases. To make things more nerve-wracking, Kelly’s first pitch to Eric Hosmer was a ball in the dirt that catcher Austin Barnes blocked. Four pitches later, Kelly got Hosmer to ground out and end the game.

Why It Was So Big: Had Hosmer singled, he could have put the Padres up 7–6 in the ninth inning, and potentially helped the Padres tie the best-of-five series at 1–1 with Walker Buehler and Clayton Kershaw possibly out of play for the series. Kershaw started this game. Buehler started Game 1 of this series.

If the Dodgers lose Game 2, it might have forced them to make some difficult starting pitching decisions. If this series would have gone four games, Tony Gonsolin was going to start Game 4.

If you recall, Game 3 started with Dustin May on the mound. He went one inning and Julio Urías took the bulk of the frames, going five in a 12–3 Dodger win.

If the Dodgers were pushed to a Game 5, that would have forced the Dodgers to make another tough decision. Buehler was nursing a blister on his right index finger and if he was the choice for a Game 5, it would have been on short rest — three days. Buehler has never started a Major League game on three-days’ rest.

Quotable: After Game 2, Kershaw had a smile on his face when asked about the final moments.

“Never a doubt — we had it in our hands. That’s how Joe Kelly rolls. Joe likes to make it interesting for us,” Kershaw said.
