Whether running a full scale business, or just getting started, there a couple tools you will need to revisit at least every year. One of those tools or processes and tools you use for tax filing. So here is a short list of alternatives you can consider now.

This blog is a part of “The Productive Solopreneur”, a series of articles about tools that help Solopreneurs to stay sane and productive. If you are more into technical stuff, read “AppEconomy” series instead.

  • Accountant. You are in good hands if an acquaintance or a friend is an Accountant(CPA). A quick hack that you can explore, is looking into tools like Wave, Quickbooks, Xero or Freshbooks to automates invoice sharing via email. Taxes are a complex subject. You don’t need to be in a position You mess your numbers. And this automation can help just a little bit.
  • Bench.co. This company keeps your books on a subscription model. They have several options starting at $100+ a month. If you are profitable, that can be a good alternative to look into as well.
  • LiveCA. Dubbed Virtual CPA, this Canadian gem serves rather as your virtual CFO. In addition to bookkeeping services, by integrating with your bookkepping software(Quickbooks, Xero, etc), you have access to an actual human CPA via Telephone. It is a bit expensive, but its advanced financial services offerings bang for the buck.
  • SimpleTax. As opposed to two previous services, this tool may replace your Accountant. It makes it easy to file tax for individuals. If you are a doer, and are not afraid of numbers, it can help you. The last time I checked it covered Canada and Quebec.

Always: check with your accountant. This blog post has no intention to replace professional tax expert you already use, but rather gives you ideas on questions you can ask for your next appointment!
