How to Boost your critical thinking ?

When we wake up in the morning, the first thing we do is we pick up the phone to check emails, news and scroll through social media stuffing our mind with useless data, and when we feel the guilt of wasting our time we try to read a book or watch a movie or a documentary, but we don’t stick to it for a long time because we are all the day long distracted which can damage our way of thinking while we should improve it.

But, between you and me, I’m a financial auditor and I love what I do, so I read economic news and financial analysis but it often happens that I forget what I read or I can’t connect my ideas and link the dots, and that was frustrating

Nowadays, we receive an overload of useless information that are stored in our mind and unfortunately can affect our daily mood unconsciously, but in the long run, our mind becomes more lazy, the worse thing is that when we debate, you suddenly can’t remember some ideas, or they are unconnected and make just nonsense or your arguments are not solid so as a result you’re less convincing and yeah you likely loose the debate.

After some research I found The solution : Writing … yes simply writing

So I decide to implement writing in my daily life, I take notes and I found it quite helpful because writing helps me organize my thoughts, reformulate the ideas in my own words, and challenge them. Alongside, I came across a video of Jordan Peterson where he says : “Writing teaches you how to THINK” and I totally agree with him.

To assess his statement, I took a look at some scientific papers to find some important insights, and analyze the best solutions to revive our mind and improve our critical thinking and how to apply these solutions in our daily life ?

The first study, for example, conducted by the department of biological sciences, Washington university on two groups, where a group A experienced writing assignment and in the other hand a group B experienced a traditional quiz-based evaluation.

“ The Results indicated that the writing group significantly improved critical thinking skills whereas the non-writing group did not. Specifically, analysis and inference skills increased significantly in the writing group but not the non-writing group. Writing students also showed greater gains in evaluation skills; however, these were not significant”

Okay, so we’ve established that I should continue writing to improve my critical thinking, but there’s even some evidence that writing helps boost our cognitive brainpower as well as our physical health via another form of writing which is expressive writing, it can be defined as writing done to explore innermost thoughts and feelings.

In another study, “ in a randomized clinical trial of 60 patients with breast cancer, 4 sessions of an expressive writing protocol resulted in a fewer reports of physical symptoms and medical appointments for cancer-related morbidity at 3 month follow-up compared with patients who were in a neutral writing group.”

So I think you got it, writing is a magical solution for our brain as well as our health.

But …How can I apply Writing in my daily life ?

  1. Write about topic of your interests : find what you love and write about it whether its sport, studies, work, life experiences, you can start by writing short notes on your phone or on a piece of paper, the goal is to push our brain to workout about any topic.
  2. Start journaling : I guess now you have a clear idea about expressive writing, so you can start journaling, about your life goals or your projects. keeping a journal will help you stay on track and reminds you of the things that are most important.

Our mind is an asset that we should take care of, especially in this era where cutting-edge technologies are overtaking the humanity. it’s in our interest to invest in it as long as we are aiming for a better life.
