In our previous blog post, we explored the hardware packed into the compact form of Ring One, showcasing its engineering brilliance. Today, we’re delving deeper into the intricate algorithms that leverage this hardware to provide insightful metrics. Join us on this journey as we uncover the health and fitness metrics that make Ring One your ultimate wellness companion.

Understanding Your Health Scores

Ring One offers three primary scores to guide you through your daily routines: Sleep, Activity, and Readiness.

  1. Sleep Score:
  • Sufficiency: Did you get enough sleep? Typically, adults need 7–8 hours, but this varies based on daily physical and mental strain.
  • Efficiency: How restful was your sleep? This score considers your movements during the night, REM cycle onset, and sleep stage distribution.
  • Consistency: Are you maintaining a regular sleep schedule? Consistency aligns your internal body clock, facilitating faster sleep onset and recovery.

Insight Example:

Your consistency score is low and it’s taking an average of 35 mins for you to fall asleep after you get in bed. This is +10 mins higher than your average. Log your pre-sleep routine to understand what might be affecting this. Try following a schedule everyday and sleeping by 11:00 pm to start seeing improvements

2. Activity Score

  • Sufficiency: Did you meet the strain goal for the day? Ring One gauges physical strain through heart rate monitoring.
  • Consistency: Are you staying active throughout the day? Inactivity alerts prompt you to move regularly.
  • Efficiency: Are you engaging in high-intensity activities? Ring One suggests pushing your limits based on your daily health status. Using these three aspects, Ring One gives you personalised insight about how you can improve your activity on a day to day basis.

Insight Example:

Amazing job today. You have hit your strain goal and have included at least 25 minutes of high intensity activity everyday for the last week. Keep up the great work to start seeing improvements to your fitness levels.

3. Readiness score

You can use the readiness score to understand how well prepared you are for the day .Readiness uses your resting heart rate, sleep efficiency, HRV trends in the day and activity strain trends together to understand if all the various factors are balanced in just the right way to ensure your mental and physical performance are at their peak.

Insight example:

Great job! Your average HRV during sleep was 90 ms ( + 18 compared to the previous day ). Your body is well rested. Go the extra mile and crush all your goals.

The three scores give you an overview to help you plan your day. By observing these three numbers over time, you can identify where you need to focus. With streaks and trends, you can dive deep into the habits that can be improved to start seeing holistic development.

Uncovering Detailed Metrics

Here’s a detailed comparison of the metrics offered by Ring One versus those offered by the other wearables:

Now, Let’s get into the unique aspects of Ring One that make it the perfect health and wellness companion:

1. Most accurate exercise HR monitor

Ring One is the most accurate exercise Heart Rate monitor in a ring form factor. While other smart rings only use a 3 axis accelerometer, we use a 6 axis accelerometer and gyroscope to capture your movement with precision. Ring One uses this movement signal to compensate for any noise that was added to your PPG signal and gives you unparalleled accuracy when on the go.

2. Strain index

Your daily strain index measures the impact of physical and mental demands that you put on your body. Your strain index determines your total body exertion and helps you understand if you’re pushing your body too hard or not enough. Ring One uses the continuous heart rate, respiratory rate and heart rate variability to measure the total strain index. This index dynamically adapts itself to help you understand when you can push yourself and when you need to take rest and give yourself time for recovery.

3. VO2 max

VO2 max is a measurement of the maximum amount of oxygen your body can consume during exercise. A higher VO2 max indicates a higher level of cardio fitness and endurance. As Ring One can measure higher heart rate values with accuracy, we are able to calculate your maximum Heart rate and give a better estimate of VO2 max.

4. Automatic activity detection and it’s metrics

We will be adding support for a total of 50 activities as part of the immediate pipeline. This will include various sports like basketball, tennis as well as daily activities like climbing floors.

5. Exercise mode and it’s metrics

Once you trigger a workout using the turn wheel ( Read more about this is Part -1 ), Ring One continuously measures your heart rate to give you detailed metrics. It gives a breakdown on the intensity of the workout , the time you spent in various heart rate zones and the strain due to the workout. It also gives you insights into your heart rate recovery.

During exercise mode, Ring One measures your heart rate continuously where as in Standard mode, Ring One measures your heart rate once in every 5 minutes.

6. Mindfulness

Ring One helps you measure the impact of your body relaxation sessions. It gives you two useful metrics that can help you find the right session that works for you:

  1. Heart Rate coherence index: Having a coherent heart beat can positively influence your emotional and cognitive performance and help you perform better. Ring One measures this by analysing your PPG signal and understanding the stability between each beat of the heart .
  2. Relaxation index: Ring One measures your short term HRV continuously during your meditation and analyses the changes. This helps you understand the impact of a relaxation session in relieving stress.

7. Modes for vitals tracking

We provide the following modes to select how frequently you want to measure the vitals from Ring One.

8. Adaptive vitals measurement

Ring One knows the best time to measure your body vitals. It’s contextual awareness make it smart enough to understand if you’ve worn it, worn it the right way, to be mindful of your hand movements and much more.

Did you know?

Most wearables don’t measure your vitals on the go because any activity or movement adds noise to your PPG signal. Ring One is the only smart ring that understands your movement with precision and intelligently chooses the right time to measure your vitals periodically throughout the day.

Here’s a list of all the vitals that Ring One measures a quick comparison of them compared to other wearables :

Here’s some sample charts showing the data collected from Ring One prototypes compared with ICU equipment:

9. Blood pressure measurement

Ring One is the first smart ring to do cuff-less blood pressure measurements. It uses contextual awareness to choose the best time to measure your blood pressure and gives you accurate readings. The two optical PPG sensors work together in perfect sync to get the best signal. The algorithms use your height, weight, age and gender to estimate your blood pressure based on the signal received by the PPG sensors.

The above data is compared against a manual blood pressure device.

Summary

Ring One ‘s advanced algorithms and comprehensive health and fitness metrics empower you to understand, monitor, and enhance your well-being.
