This blog series describe the work of the Video Infrastructure team at Instagram during 2017. This post gives an overview of Instagram’s growth, video features, and the architecture of video infrastructure. Disclaimer: This is a personal blog. Instagram has seen tremendous growth in 2017, reaching 800 million monthly active users, 500 million daily active users, 25 million businesses, 2 million advertisers.

Video has been an key focus and format for Instagram. We launched innovative new video experiences, and enhanced existing features with video throughout Instagram: feed, stories, direct, profile, search & explore, and live. Below are some of the video product announcements in 2017:

We rebuilt the video infrastructure in 2017 to significantly improve scalability, performance (latency, reliability, quality), and features so we were able to support the explosive growth of video usage. Below is an overly simplified architecture diagram of Instagram Video Infrastructure:
