In order to start a pilot training program you will need to get a Medical Certificate. Class-1 or Class-2 medical check is needed depending on the requirements of a specific pilot licence you are going to acquire. When you are starting Private Pilot Licence (PPL) flight training in EASA, you need a class-2 medical certificate obtained from an aeromedical examiner. Class-2 Certificate must be taken before solo flight. It is not approved to fly solo without it. You can make an appointment before medical check with the aeromedical examiner yourself or the school can do it behalf of you. It takes rougly 1 day. Getting class 2 certificate is relatively easy process rather than class 1. Examiner basically check eyes and colour blindness, cardiology, audio test, tension, urine. If everything is fine, You will get your class-2 certificate issued by aeromedical examiner and it is valid for 5 years.

Class 1 medical certificate is required for all pilots involved in commercial aviation. This certificate has the most restrictive medical standards. The holder of a medical certificate must be mentally and physically fit to safely exercise the privileges of the applicable flight license. Class 1 medical exams cover the same items that the second-class medical does, with stricter standards and an emphasis on cardiovascular function, as well as general medical condition. An electrocardiogram is required for a first-class medical, and for older pilots, the doctor may focus more on age-related issues that may interfere with flight duties. A medical examination at an aeromedical center may take up to 3 days. The medical examination will include the :

  • Medical history
  • Eyesight
  • Physical examination
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Lung function test
  • Haemoglobin blood test
  • Urine test

A Class 1 medical certificate is valid for 12 months, unless you are 40 or over and carry out single pilot commercial air transport operations carrying passengers; or you are over 60. In both cases, it is valid for 6 months.

In general practice, pilot candidates first obtain their Class 2 medical certificate. Since the validity of the Class 1 certificate is 1 year, they receive it just before they start commercial and multi-engine training.
