Protests have been taking place in front of the houses of Supreme Court Justices Kavanaugh, Roberts, and Alito. There has been much criticism of these protests from conservatives and counterarguments from protesters, which I won’t go into here. The protests I’ve seen appear loud but peaceful.

In Japan, demonstrations in front of the prime minister’s official residence occur regularly. For example, there were weekly antinuclear demonstrations in front of the residence for nine consecutive years between 2012 and 2021. At one point, they involved as many as 200,000 protesters—certainly loud enough to be audible inside the residence, as Prime Minister Noda told the press in 2012. They are tolerated for freedom of speech. The police are present, and the protests are peaceful.

Here are some chants I hear (that I have not previously transcribed from protests at the Supreme Court and from May 3–8. )

Protests in front of Justice Kavanaugh’s house, May 7, 2022

Near Justice Roberts’ house, May 8, 2022
