The newest episode of Pearl Lam’s The Pearl Lam Podcast features special guest Mr Doodle who gives viewers an insight into the early life of the doodling genius. Mr Doodle and Pearl Lam (林明珠) kindly sketch out the earliest memories of the artist, as well as piecing together the artistic puzzle of his character.

Early in the episode, Pearl Lam and Sam Cox began discussing the Sam’s childhood. The dynamic duo’s dialogue made it clear that childhood has the potential to shape your career and later life.

Mr Doodle is now a well-known artist with over 3 million social media followers. However, he wasn’t always the famous face that you know today.

Pearl Lam (林明珠) began the podcast episode by asking Mr Doodle about his childhood.

“Have you always doodled?” Pearl Lam (林明珠) asked the famous artist, “what inspired you?” she added.

“Yes, I have” replied Mr Doodle, “I started to doodle at three years old. I was inspired by the cartoons that I’d watch.”

“I’d watch cartoons like SpongeBob Square Pants and the Simpsons, and I used to copy the cartoons by drawing out the characters on paper.”

Pearl Lam was delighted with Sam’s answer, and asked if cartoons were his main source of inspiration.

“Most of my inspiration came from video games. I didn’t really like drawing what was in front of me in real life, like trees or flowers. I used to like drawing things from the TV screen, like cartoon-style vibrant, colourful, animals or made-up creatures.”

Sam’s early childhood clearly shaped his artistic career. It was important that he was allowed the freedom to doodle and express himself in his early years. This allowed Sam to develop a doodling business from an early age.

“You were a really great businessman” said Pearl Lam, “when you were about thirteen years old, you started doodling on t-shirts and selling them. Then you saved up all of your money to spend at university to get art supplies and food!”

Sam was clearly an avid businessman when he was younger, as he revealed to Pearl that he “also used to buy sweets, chocolate and fizzy drinks in bulk at school, and sell them on to other students.”

However, Sam Cox wasn’t always an art aficionado and businessman. When Pearl Lam asked Sam if he had been to many galleries growing up, Sam replied in the negative.

“I was pretty clueless about the art world; I thought that galleries were places that artists would just rent to show their work off.”

‘I didn’t know that art galleries represented artists and worked with them to further their careers” he continued, “my experience was very limited, but I was determined to not let that intimidate me.”

Pearl Lam and Sam Cox’s conversation in The Pearl Lam Podcast is an enlightening and refreshing insight into the art world. At the same time, the podcast reveals much about the benefits of allowing your children freedom to have creative hobbies.
