Accessorizing an Outfit — Yep! That’s What I Do.

Accessories are an armor of self-expression

Fashion accessories aren’t just a gold chain, a pair of earrings, or an everyday watch that we rarely change, there is plenty more stuff out there that you haven’t tried such as patterned scarfs, bold sunglasses, chic bags, vintage watches, a perfect pair of heels that screams uniqueness — in other words, the world is your oyster when it comes to accessorizing your outfit.

Wearing expensive or branded clothes may or may not stand out, although sprinkling the magic of statement accessories will definitely turn many heads.

Accessories: Styling done right with a scarf and oversized hoops

I never really understood the logic of aggressive spending on expensive clothes, rather I choose to spend on statement necklaces that are one of a kind — on comfortable heels that hold one’s attention — on structured bracelets that speak the language of minimalism.

I have worked in numerous firms from publishing to the IT domain and found only a few women who can spark interest from their accessories. I remember a colleague referred as ‘the girl who wears glass earrings’ and that became her USP.

You don’t have to be bound by rules while getting dressed; you don’t need to please others by dressing in certain ways — you do what your heart tells you to do and that’s how you nurture your individuality. The choice of outfit may not be the talk of the town but styling an oxidized choker on a salwar suit for a presentation or bow tie necklace for a corporate event can be.

I was just 15 when I pushed the doors of jewelry and welcomed myself into the world of accessories; understanding the concept of minimalism didn’t take a lot of my time — I know if my outfit is too loud, the accessories should shy a bit.

I have been into styling accessories for the past 10 years and recommend my clients to not complicate their overall look — whether it’s your relationship or outfit, just try to keep it simple, try to focus on a statement piece — it could be anything from a bold necklace to a shimmering dress or a premium sunglasses.

Accessories: Hat, bohemian handbag, belt, and scarf

When you find the hero of your look, let others be a second and third-lead character — don’t try to steal the thunder of your hero piece.

I remember a girl from last summer who styled a yellow dress with a soft beige color handbag, and tied her hair with a satin scarf — everything could have been balanced and beautiful — but then she chose to wear an indigo-colored jacket on her yellow dress — it felt like the dress was murdered by that jacket. I have seen a lot of women out there wearing funky neckpieces on a sequined dress, find it unamusing layering gold and silver jewelry, and adding too many accessories on color block outfits.

The sequin in itself is a hero piece; the yellow dress in summer is the leading character, don’t try to hide their existence — the satin scarf and a handbag along with a brown shade of flats are enough accessories, and it is high time that we start taking them seriously.

Stop thinking that if you are wearing white then it’s boring and more layers of bold or contrasting color are required.

The golden tip is to add a simple yet elegant gold neckpiece, a small golden hoop, a pair of sunglasses, a structured handbag, an aesthetic watch, a beige color flats — and that is the real definition of ‘less is more’.

On that note — hope that we all make the right choice with what we have in our wardrobe.
