3 part series: Artist + Musician + Entrepreneur

Yep, I’m a painter.

I was lucky that my high school in Grantsburg WI had a decent art program. That meant I was able to play with multiple mediums such as ring making, pottery, stained glass, drawing and what not. I fell in love with making side of art like stained glass and the metal arts.

I initially went to college for communication and broadcasting but ended up graduating with a studio art degree focused in painting.

It was always about process for me, that’s why I love painting. Creating a painting for me meant it had pigment in it but it didn’t have to be a traditional painting.

Latex on wood + yogurt mold

The challenging part was to mix mediums and see what happens. After college I started messing with organic materials with paint. That was a blast.

This painting still is my favorite.

Its tough to see it but do you see those yellowish brown spots? Yep, rotting yogurt. Mold.

I found out that if I added food coloring with the yogurt rotting it would turn that color — blue, green etc.

Do I still paint? No, not as often. Its on hold at the moment. Every now and then I write down an idea or two. I put down the brush and picked up digital media — I’ll tell that story at some point. For now I’m focused on using the skills I learned as a painter: how can I mix mediums to create something beautiful — break the rules and watch it grow.

Part 1 of 3.
