Portals Project Update (week #32)

Portals
4 min readAug 11, 2022

Hi everyone,

Welcome to this week's project update! This week we’ll focus mostly on the upcoming Portals PFP Project.

The Portals PFP Project

Introduction and the first article with background information on why we decided to create a PFP project can be found here:

Let’s dive in!

Again, quick, if you haven’t already, then make sure you read the PFP article above first (https://medium.com/@portals_/genesis-citizen-cards-the-portals-pfp-project-62b3714a74cb)

Art
When it comes to the art, we knew from the beginning that there would be a 3D/Avatar side to the Portals PFP Project (of course!). However, we also knew that the 2D/Image part of a PFP Project is just so important to get right.

For this reason, we started with a 3D base model to have a proof of concept in 3D (not all 2D art translates well into 3D). After that, then everything we’ve done art-wise has been in 2D to make sure it looks good and works well as a PFP (Profile Picture) on various platforms and devices.

Avatar
When the NFT collection has been minted, then the process of re-creating everything in 3D will begin. We’re excited about having a collection that works very well (in our humble opinion) “natively” in both 2D and 3D!

Metaverse Pod
Your own small personal space in the Metaverse!

The PFP NFT comes with the same utility as a Portals Genesis Citizen Card NFT, which means all holders will get access to the unique Genesis Pod:

Genesis Pod

Pod utility will increase over time, but right now, you can already invite over a couple of friends, voice chat, and display NFTs. We’re working on making it possible for you to utilize and display different kinds of items that you can find and gather in Portals too!

More Metaverse Utility
We will implement a utility for each PFP NFT that can be used together with a Portals Real Estate NFT (or your own Pod). Real Estate holders will get a similar utility, BUT the PFP NFT version will come with a notable twist!

For this reason, we’ll also open up the ability to rent and lend out your PFP NFT (similar to renting Portals Real Estate NFT at Cardinal: https://portals.cardinal.so/).

Some traits might be more desirable to rent or lend to creators, communities, and companies. Note that this is not a promise of “passive incoming” or “revenue,” but we think it’s something fun and truly unique to Portals. More details to be revealed after the Art Reveal.

A lot of 1/1 PFPs
There will be a lot of 1/1 PFPs. Everyone who owns a Genesis Card will have the chance to get one on launch day.

“Education Arm”
Some companies have a “Venture Arm” for investing. This PFP Project (and Portals) will have an “Education Arm,” and we think it will be powerful. It will also be another reason for owning one of the PFP NFTs.

It truly deserves its own full post, so we’ll do that next week. It’s a no-brainer, and we’ll probably see Portals competitors doing something similar, but we’ll have a head start and be hard to beat.

Making the “relevant audience” as big as possible
While working on the PFP project, we’ve constantly asked ourselves how to make the “relevant audience” as big as possible. This includes our work with traits/art, community input, metaverse utility, education/professional utility, and more.

How to get the PFP Project?
Your ticket/token to get the PFP Project is a Portals Genesis Citizen Card: https://magiceden.io/marketplace/portals_citizen_cards

Lightning round

Other things worth mentioning:

  • We (fingers crossed) should have at least two collaboration announcements next week, if not three. Many things got moved around in July and the start of August, so we’ll see a lot of news and activities in the 2nd half of August (especially with the PFP Project too). So strap in! We’re in for a ride over the next weeks.
  • The Cardinal Renting platform v2 is now out and looking great! You can check it out here: https://portals.cardinal.so/
  • We’re rushing to finish up the Building Cubes testing so it can go live as soon as possible (see the update from last week). We can’t wait!

See you next week
