The Sigma Team - Plan For Building Next Generation Teams

This is an attempt to manage the skill set within team members through a leads/Managers perspective. At the end of this assessment, one should be able to assess the team members and help those who needs help in domain knowledge improvement so that the whole team has each others back, and build the team which is absolutely strong, The Sigma Team.

Sigma Team is team which knows their responsibilities very well. In sigma team no single person can be overburden with work, not even team lead. In sigma team assessments plan leads/managers needs to categories into alpha-beta-gamma-delta.

Alpha are the seniors in team, these are folks who are go to person in your team who knows everything in details. These folks are always overburden with work and as a lead you trust them with your task and you need all work to be done like these alpha team. As a sigma team planner your task is to reduce alpha work load.

Beta are the immediate jrs to alpha, these team members in team knows system in bits and pieces. If given a task they can do it but might not as efficiently as alphas, beta needs to connect with alpha in order to get final confirmation or approval to complete their task. As sigma team planner you need to train beta team so that they feel comfortable working independently, these beta team are the team members we are looking up to become next alphas.

Gamma are the new joiner in the team or the team members who has just started and completely new to system. As a sigma team planner you need to put more effort on gamma team members so that they can level up. At this time you need to come to conclusion whether gamma can be beta or he can become delta.

Delta are the team members you don’t need on your team, either you remove them or they want to leave from team.

Now, that we have categories the team, lead need to come up with the training plan for Beta and Gamma to level up with the help of Alpha. This plan has to be time bound, assessment before plan and after plan should make it clear to you who needs more effort. This assessment also helps you manage talent/skills within team, so that no one person holds critical knowledge. This assessment benefits in managing leaves within team so that the whole team has each others back.

This is not one time activity, lead has to assess the team periodically so that team remains motivated and strong. Let’s build strong team, with strong foundation, The Sigma Team.
