All in the Family: Jesus’ Siblings
The half-brothers and sisters of the Messiah
Jesus’ Family
Jesus is the Son of God, the Jewish Messiah, and the Only Savior of Man. But when he was walking around on terra firma, his earthly family was similar to other families in his time.
He had a mother, Mary, who was a devout Jewish woman. His stepfather, Joseph, was a carpenter.
He also had sisters and brothers — the children of Mary and Joseph — who sometimes did not understand his mission or his teachings.
- Jesus had four half-brothers: James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon.
- He also had at least two unnamed sisters.
- Jesus’ genealogy can be found in Matthew and Luke.
- James and Jude, Jesus’ half-brothers, each penned an eponymous letter (book) in the New Testament.
- Jesus was born in Bethlehem. He lived in Egypt for a while to escape a death sentence imposed by King Herod. Joseph and Mary later settled in Nazareth. Nazareth was his hometown.
- At one point, even Jesus’ own brothers didn’t believe he was the Messiah.
- The book of Acts mentions that Mary and his brothers were in fellowship with the apostles.
- That time Jesus’ family went to check on him… because you know, they thought he was crazy…
Read my article about Cain and Abel, the very first brothers here. Or, there’s always this one about “zombies” in Scripture.
