淡季、瞭若指掌、探究到底的英文可以怎麼說呢?
各位好，延續上一篇，末日列車的用法精選已經來到第四篇囉。大家如果有一邊看影集的話，也可以特別注意這些句子出現的前後文，也就是這些句子是在什麼場合、什麼情境下出現的，這樣會對日後的理解及使用上更有幫助喔。那我們就開始吧：
第七集：宇宙對萬物毫不在乎
．The universe is indifferent.
宇宙對萬物毫不在乎。
indifferent：冷漠、毫不關心的。這句的意思是宇宙有其運行之法則，不在意我們個別生物的想法，它自有其安排。另外若後面要接受詞，則會用 indifferent to someone/something 的形式。例句：
We cannot remain indifferent to racism.
我們不能再持續對種族歧視冷漠了。
．I’m just keeping an eye on our newest engineer.
我只是在好好關心我們最新的工程師
keep an eye on：這個片語出現的頻率非常非常高，意思是好好關注、好好留意。例如：
Keep an eye on our YouTube channel after the event.
活動結束後，請密切注意我們的 Youtube 頻道。
．Lean back against the pillows. Get your knees up.
往後躺在枕頭上，膝蓋抬起來。
lean back against (something)：lean back 是向後倒的意思，而 lean back against 則是指向後倒時靠在某物上。
get one’s knees up：指把膝蓋抬高。若走路時這樣說一般指希望對方跑起來的意思。
．In the old world, I had a B and B in Kendal.
在舊世界，我在英國肯德爾有間民宿。
B and B：Bed and Breakfast。指提供住宿及早餐的民宿。世界上最大的短期出租住宿網站 AirBnB 名字裡的 BnB 就是這個字來的喔。
附帶一提，你知道 Netflix 的 flix 是從 flicks (電影)而來的嗎?
．It was the off-season, so I took it upon myself to look after him.
那時是淡季。所以我自己決定(把他收留下來)照顧他。
off-season：淡季，也可說 low season。旺季的英文則是 peak season 或 high season。
take it upon oneself：指不經指示而行動，自告奮勇、自行決定。
．Count me out.
別算我這份。
count someone out：表示把自己排除，不要算我一份。其反義詞 ”算我一份” 則是 count me in。而 count something out 則是指排除其可能性、覺得沒辦法成功的意思。例句：
Apple TV+ got a slow start. But don’t count it out just yet.
Apple TV+ 一開始起步較慢，但別以為它們就這樣沒戲了。
Once you pass through that door, there is no turning back.
一旦你穿過那扇門，就沒得回頭了。
there is no turning back：很常見到的句子，表示沒有回頭路。
第八集：這是他的革命
．It’s Wilford who has his finger on our pulse, who knows exactly what we need.
是威佛他對我們瞭若指掌，完全了解我們的需求。
have one’s finger on the/one’s pulse：把手指放到脈搏上，表示關心其最新動態、了解其一舉一動，或對其瞭若指掌。例句：
He keeps his finger on the pulse of what’s hot.
他對於現在流行什麼一直瞭若指掌。
．Are you having a go at me?
你是在指責我嗎?
have a go at：注意此為英式用法 (說這句話的人是 Ruth)，意思為指責、批評之意。例句：
My wife had a go at me last night for coming home late again.
我老婆昨晚因為我又回家太晚而罵我。
而在英國以外的地方，have a go at 這個片語是試看看，和 try it 接近。
．We’ll get to the bottom of this.
我們會探究到底。
get to the bottom of something：到一件事情的最底部，意即找到真相、查個水落石出之意。例句：
We need more studies with larger sample sizes to get to the bottom of this question.
我們需要更多有較大樣本數的研究來探究這個問題的真相。
．I don’t wanna rough you up unless I have to.
除非必要，不然我不想揍你。
rough someone up：非正式的用法，指揍某人一頓的意思，類似 beat someone up。例句：
It is hard to believe that the police can rough you up without punishment.
很難相信警察能把你揍一頓後還不被處罰。
．I’ll buy you some time.
我會幫你拖延一些時間。
buy time：拖延、爭取時間。除了 buy someone time 的用法外，亦可用 buy time for (someone or something)。例句：
This treatment can buy time for the patient, but I’m afraid it will not cure him.
這個治療法可以替病人拖延時間，但恐怕沒辦法治癒他。
．Double time!
小跑步！
Double time：在軍事用語中，double time 是命令對方不要再用走的而是用小跑步的。

．He doesn’t have the stomach for sustained cruelty.
他沒這個膽子一直做出殘忍的事。
not have the stomach for ：雖然 stomach 是胃，但這個慣用語的意思是沒這個膽子、沒這個決心去做某事(特別是危險的事)。例句：
I don’t have the stomach for such risks myself.
我沒膽自己去冒這樣的險。
