This guide is part of Digital Weddings, a series of essays to help you figure out catering for your wedding (or accompanying event!). Head to the introduction or click around the “Next Steps” at the bottom of this post to navigate.

Planning a custom wedding menu takes time. It’s shaped by a combination of your ideas and what’s possible at your venue. Set aside 2 weeks to a month to do this research before you talk to a caterer. If you gather a little inspiration every day, you’ll have a full spectrum of ideas to choose from and narrow down.

Store your ideas somewhere

I recommend using digital, shareable platforms because it would be hard to track versions of a PDF, Word or Excel spreadsheet (as much as I personally love them). Plus, you can keep adding to it when inspiration strikes!

  1. Pinterest board

Create a secret board on Pinterest. That way you won’t spoil the surprise for any guests or your partner.

Invite a close friend or two to help source ideas.

When you’ve filled it up, add your caterer as a collaborator so they can take a look.

2. Google Doc

Docs is the tool I use the most. It functions just like Microsoft Word but can be accessed by multiple parties online.
