During its Gamescom presentation in August, Nintendo did more than provide guests with playable demos of its current games. In fact, a source claims that the gaming hardware company had revealed the Switch 2 console to a private party.

According to a source via Eurogamer, another presentation was taking place behind closed doors besides the usual Nintendo floorshow in Cologne last month. Nintendo developers were also sharing tech demos of the Switch 2 with external developers in secrecy.

Among these demos was an enhanced version of the current Switch launch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The demonstration served to reveal the enhancing capabilities of the new system running last-gen games. This would also suggest that the Switch 2 is backward compatible with its predecessor’s software, though nothing suggested here is conclusive.

Nintendo isn’t quite ready to reveal its plans for its inevitable Switch successor to the public. But, some analysts speculate that the new hardware could launch sometime in 2024. A recent report suggests the Switch 2 could arrive during the Holiday season of that same year.

Other sources reported that development kits for the next-gen console are already in the hands of some third-party developers. Predictably, however, Nintendo hasn’t confirmed any of the sources thus far.

Despite this buzz, Nintendo is moving forward with an impressive lineup of games announced for the current Switch through the rest of 2023. Among the line-up are Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Super Mario RPG remake, Detective Pikachu Returns, and more.
