Recently, along with Data Mesh, there’s been attention on a method of Data Architecture Design known as Data Fabric.
When I first encountered these two concepts, the ‘textile industry’ that played a pivotal role in South Korea’s economic development during the 1970s and 80s came to mind, and then DONG IL Corporation… and my friend Young-hak who lived near DONG IL Corporation… reminded me of the sliding door at my house that’s hard to open, which Young-hak was supposed to fix.
Oops! I’ve got sidetracked… I start this article in the earnest hope that Young-hak will quickly fix our family’s sliding door.

The reason I started this series is that I included information about Data Fabric in a recent proposal I was working on. While drafting the proposal, I thought I had a decent understanding of Data Fabric, but as I was creating the slides, I strongly felt the need for a clearer organization of the concept. Also, my search for in-depth articles only yielded posts that listed the concept without much detail, which is another reason why I decided to write this series myself.

Data Fabric refers to modern architecture and technologies for data management and integration, optimizing data consistency, integration, and governance. It plays a role in seamlessly connecting data across various sources and systems.

Data Fabric is related to various aspects of the data ecosystem, including data governance, data quality, data catalogs, security, and data processing and analysis.

The main features of Data Fabric include:

1. Integration of distributed data sources
2. Automated and intelligent services
3. Data governance and security
4. Flexibility and scalability
5. Data visibility and accessibility
6. Real-time data processing and analysis

Data Fabric can play a significant role in driving data-centric strategies for businesses, maximizing the value of data, supporting data-driven decision-making, and reducing the complexity of data management. Let’s explore how Data Fabric can integrate with an organization’s existing systems and the innovative approaches it can enable in future discussions.
