Chapter 1 — She is Not For Sale Anymore

I got a text one day from a lady who was looking to sell her horse. She asked me if I would take in this really nice grey mare to ride, video and sell for her. I had an open spot in my barn so I immediately said “Yes of course.”

I left a few days after to pick up the horse and bring it back home where I would get her sale ready. upon arrival, i knew the horse hadn't had much done with it recently. She was “turned out to pasture for a while” as some people like to disguise as being neglected and living in a pasture with bare minimum care.

That was her, she was tall, grey, and had the pedigree to be a barrel racing athlete. But she was rough and needed some serious love and care. I knew a diamond lived under the muddy long coat, the skinny body, the scared and untrusting-looking eye she had. I was ready to tackle this project.

I loaded her up and we were off to start our new chapter together. It was one that included a bath, better nutrition, a fitness routine and just a daily routine with humans. I feel she thanked us, even though she was in discomfort, she willingly accepted our offerings and became a part of our herd in no time.

Within a month, she was already changing for the better. Still lean but muscled. She still had a long way to go, but I was able to ride her daily and make progress with every interaction we had. I thought she was ready to be exhibitioned to get some sale videos so that’s what we did.

We went to one of the local winter jackpots. I made a practice run and all I could say was “Woah, this mare is cool!” She ran a competitive 1/2D time effortlessly despite not being in great condition yet. I was already thinking of her potential, what could she do when she is feeling her 100% best?

I called the owner, I said she just ran a 15.3 in her exhibition, I think we could enter her and get some stats, you know, for advertising. I think the next jackpot that mare and I won it. Being on such a fast yet turny barrel horse was a thrill I had not experienced that much as I was dealing with my own horse issues and riding average horses, whereas Grey, was not your average horse. She was designed to be a winner; she had the try, the talent and the work ethic to make a great one, I felt that and so did my mom.

I continued riding her once she was advertised and we started to get some inquiries. As the leads came in, my heart was set on that horse not going anywhere else but with me. There was a moment after one of the jackpot runs where me and my mom looked at each other and both were thinking the same thing “We should own her.”

I was so excited to tell her current owner that I was going to take her myself. I knew she would be happy to hear given the amazing progress we already made in such a short amount of time.

We were onto new and exciting things!
