Week 2 - Getting started

Jan 27, 2020, marked the beginning of Week 2 of the Women Who Code Mentorship program 2.0.

Recap of Week 1

In Week 1 we had a discussion and planning over the call regarding all we want to do in the coming weeks of the program. And all of the mentees were prepared with their list of To-Dos as Week 2 started.

What I included in my list was as follows :

a) There are many scholarship opportunities coming around and they require a proper application which really impacts our chances of selection selections so I wanted to know how to write such essays and what are the major points to focus on and write while applying for such programs.

b) To contribute to Open Source Projects one must know how to use GitHub properly. Although I know it a bit and had some confusion so I got them cleared by the video links shared by my mentor just the next day.

c) For placement interviews, we really have to focus on Data Structures and algorithms so I added that too.

d) And I am very curious to know how to build a perfect resume that can increase my chances of being selected for really good opportunities.

e) On the call, we talked about projects we can work on, how we can find Hackathon teams online as well and what kind of projects we must take up. I also asked my Mentor to review my SOP. And the most important point that our mentor took up was building an online presence and how we can do that.

f) She told us how important it is to establish an online presence these days and when we go out to apply for jobs, our resume is not enough. Gone are the days when recruiters only cared about the grades, they look for a candidate who not only fulfills the technical aspect but the soft skills too from written to verbal to online presence, leadership skills, etc.

Jeff Bezos defined the term personal branding by saying,

Your personal brand is what people say about you when you’re not in room.

If we have a Web Profile instead of just a resume, it’s likely to make a greater impact. It really helps us to stand out from the crowd. So, below are the points that I found really useful to create an online presence :

  1. Manage your social networks. Connect with those from whom you can learn something.
  2. Start a practice of writing blogs specific to your line of work.
  3. Stay consistent with whatever you want to excel in.
  4. Create your personal brand. It’d help you attract opportunities.

That was all about week 2. See you in the next blog!
