Worldcoin, TBD, Human, and their 79 competitors

Digital identity is the new Fintech: Worldcoin faces competition from digital identity startups - TBD by Jack Dorsey (Block), Human by the Libermans (ex-Snap), and 79 other ones to watch.

Worldcoin is often mistakenly identified as a crypto startup or a new cryptocurrency — these are just derivatives of the main niche that Sam Altman’s startup is creating and fighting for: digital identity, or more precisely, borderless international reusable digital identity. The difference between digital identity and SSO, how digital identity affects financial and government services, can form a new state, what to read, and which events to attend — I will share that later. As well as some classification and categorization of them, and also my personal experience using each service or application. Today, I’ll just outline the landscape of what’s on the market. (If you think something needs to be removed, added, or changed — ping me via i@slava.ai)

Worldcoin, World ID

Founded in 2019 by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Max Novendstern (left in 2021), and Alex Blania (CEO). Live. For end-users (mobile only) and for developers (not for now). Whitepaper.

Motto: Worldcoin: for every human. Building the world’s largest identity and financial network to serve as a public utility.

World ID. A more human internet with global proof of personhood. Privacy‑First. Self‑custodial. Decentralized. World ID is a digital passport that lets you prove you are a unique and real person while remaining anonymous. Use Sign in with Worldcoin to authenticate into web, mobile, and decentralized applications, and privately share your personhood verifications including phone number for ease, or biometrics for the maximum level of assurance.

  • The project raised $25m in seed funding from backers led by Andreessen Horowitz. Raised: $100M, total funding is $125M, 3B valuation.
  • end-users: 130000 in Nov 2021, 2000000 in May 2023 (2352730 for now)
  • 180 (?) employees (155 on Linkedin), 40 jobs opened

In this text, I’ll limit myself to just a list, motto (positioning, slogan), and a brief background of the startup’s founders — nothing more. Among them, there are centralized and decentralized ones, old and brand new, with users and just a landing page, useful (solving some user problem and having a purpose) and useless (so far, Worldcoin has only stood out for the hype around Sam Altman and giving away money for installing the app), focusing on compliance or on the technical security of password storage, primarily targeting end users and primarily focusing on developers.
