Map project: Gossan Hill Nature Reserve
I’ve decided to make an orienteering map of the Gossan Hill Nature Reserve as a mapping project. I know that orienteering maps of the area already exist. The goal isn’t really about the usefulness or accuracy of the final product. I’ve got more of a learning goal in mind.
I often walk or jog through Gossan Hill, so it is convenient area for me.
Gossan Hill is 8km from Parliment House in Canberra, Australia’s capital city. The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) government has published some information about Gossan Hill Nature Reserve. You can see area on Google Maps and on Open Street Map.
Google Maps says the latitude and longitude at the middle of the area are -35.2465952 / 149.0757467 (or 35° 14' 47.7"S, 149° 4' 32.7"E according to WolframAlpha).
We’ll aim to produce a map of enough quality that it could be used by a local orienteering club for a training or recreational event.
This article is part of the Orienteering Mapping with LiDAR, Smartphones and Free Tools series.
