Albums Released in the Month of September | SAOSIN | Revisiting the 2006 Self-Titled Album
So many albums throughout the years dropped in the month of September, and I can’t seem to keep up. So many fire gems, but today I was pleasantly reminded of how much I loved the self-titled album by Saosin, and the first single “Voices” is a definite fave of mine along with many others off the album. I remember the music video being really good. So, I had to revisit this record. This record was also released in September 2006, so it feels right!
On top of that, everything this band produces, regardless of who their singer is at any given time, is much anticipated for many reasons, and I’m glad Cove Reber is currently with the band. Reber became the lead vocalist in 2004 after Anthony Green departed from the band. The self-titled album feels like one of those transitional albums, and many of those who discovered it may have been going through some kind of major transition in their lives. 2006 was a special year for me, because I graduated high school, and it was later that year I first heard “Bury Your Head” and then caught onto “Voices.” So I listened to this album quite a bit on my way to and from college the following year. Both songs are excellent, from the meaningful woven lyrics to the impressive vocal mastery of Cove Reber.
Kicking off the album with “It’s Far Better to Learn” has a killer intro that just sucks you into the story with the guitar buildup, the prominent drumbeats, and the distinct guitar riffs and melodies bringing a sense of familiarity, which is essentially at the heart of the Saosin sound. Check out my review of the bands’ 2003 EP Translating the Name featuring Anthony Green as lead vocalist. All in all, I think the band stayed consistent all throughout the album. “Follow and Feel” is another favorite. When it comes to the songwriting of Cove and guitarist Beau Burchell, the lyrics are very strong and compelling. The album is a go-to from my generation, and you can feel that Reber really put his heart into the album to bring forth something special. I Always enjoyed his vocal style, and his vocal range goes high, which I’m a huge fan of.
