My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 Ep 10: Doing Everything Possible (& Successfully) To Make “The Sick” Scene Subversive

I was already expecting My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 episode 10 to subvert the “The girl who likes me is sick and I am going to take care of her at her house” trope based on past precedent, especially last episode. But it really exceeded my expectations. Although there are basically two parts to episode 10, I’m going to focus on this aforementioned trope and use the other part of the episode (the first half) as a means to augment it. You’ll see what I mean once I get there.

In regards to the “sick” scene, My Love Story… almost went out of its way to make what is usually a very sensual, intimate and passionate moment in romance anime less so. Name me a series, and I can almost guarantee that things get at least a little steamy during this ubiquitous moment.

The first example is the overabundance of overly cartoon-ish, cute renderings of both Akane and Yamada. Some of the many instances include when Yamada tries to get Akane to drink some water, but his efforts fail spectacularly or when she’s thanking him for saving her life. Even when…
