All the Delis

In 2008 I took 112 pictures of delis in Brooklyn (actually 111; the first one is in Queens). This summer I retraced my steps. I’ve written a short essay on the project in a separate post. I also plotted the delis on this Google Map.

Later I found (more or less) matching photos of the most of these buildings from the 1980s at a website called 80s.nyc, which uses pictures taken by New York City’s Department of Finance between 1983 and 1988 for tax appraisals. The quality of these pictures is low, and the photographers seem not to have taken much trouble to get clear views, but however useless they are, I’ve included all that were available. You can also find them on the New York City Department of Records website (262,624 images of Brooklyn alone).

The order below is arbitrary, but in general runs north to south, starting in Long Island City and ending across the street from the Greenwood Cemetery.
