We created hello to help you connect with people who share your interests. Whether your goal is to expand your real life social circle or meet interesting people online, we have created a list of 6 ways to connect with fun, likeminded people inside the hello app.

1 — Join a community

The best way to start connecting with people is by joining a hello community you like. Communities are groups of people who share a common interest and are great places for you to join conversations with others.

Example: If you love cute animals, join a community that likes to discuss and share cute animals. You’ll be able to quickly find people who share something in common with you.

2 — Leave a comment

In real life, the way we get to know others is by starting or joining a conversation. On hello, the way we get to know others is by leaving comments. If you see a jot you like or want to join a conversation, leave a comment that engages in good conversation.

Example: If you love cute animals and see a jot with a cute penguin, leave a comment someone would find useful. Avoid leaving single-worded comments (things like ‘nice’ or ‘cool’) and try leaving comments with some depth (like ‘What a great picture! I think penguins are absolutely adorable!’).

3 — Post a jot

Posting jots on hello is the BEST way to create new connections. Posting jots helps others get to know you and opens the way for conversation.

Share something original (no stolen pics, please) and tag ONLY the personas that match. Tagging personas that don’t match your jot can hurt your ability to meet people.

Example: If you love cute animals, post a picture you took of a cute animal and write something brief on the jot —something like, ‘I found this cute turtle hanging out at the lake’. You should only tag the ‘animal lover’ persona — as accurately tagging your jots makes connecting with the right people easier.

4 —Follow someone

If you like jots or comments that someone posts, you should follow their hello profile to stay in touch. To follow a user, simply tap their profile image, and then tap the ‘follow’ button located below their picture.

hello tip: We advise users to wait to ‘friend’ someone until they get to know them. Follow someone and get to know them before sending a friend request.

5 — Create a community

We recommend only creating a community once you have done the other steps towards making new friends. Creating a community will allow you to create a place for people to connect over a specific interest that does not yet exist on hello.

Example: If you like cute animals, but want to be friends with people who specifically like turtles — you should create a community for ‘people who like turtles’ and tag the ‘animal lover’ persona.

6 — Unlock ‘user search’

If you want to easily and quickly browse profiles of users who share a common persona, you’ll want to unlock the ‘user search’ features inside of the profile tab. User search is a feature where you can browse profiles quickly to find and connect with people who share a common interest. To get this feature, you will need to reach level 4 on hello.

Why is this feature locked? This feature is locked to prevent people from joining hello and spamming users. We require users to reach level 4 to show that they are here to connect and be mindful of the network. If you do encounter someone spamming in ‘user search’, please report their profile to the team by tapping the ••• icon.
