Batman 1992: So Freaking Bizarre

Recently I watched Batman Returns released in 1992. The movie was directed by Tim Burton. I am a huge Batman fanatic and my aim is to- rewatch every Batman things related possible. Out of all the Batman movies I’ve watched, though, this one is my least favorite. I rate it a ⅘ stars because I understood most of the movie, simple to follow. This particular Batman I found very bizarre. I didn’t know what to think of it. I felt high with weed as I watched it, to be quite frank. Most Tim Burton movies I find are creepy looking, and I guess this is the case for Batman Returns: 1992.

Premise of Batman Returns: 1992:

Batman Returns is about a villain named Penguin. Penguin is quite creepy, more so than the Joker. He has a long nose, with long messy hair, weird looking teeth, and crinkly skin and kind of reminds me of an evil version of Mad Eye Moody from Harry Potter. He works with penguins, and uses a weird duck to travel places. Penguin wants to become mayor of Gotham City, tried to be, and ruins everyhting. People are worried about him, and there are many newspaper clippings, that people wrote in Gotham about him. We learn his real name is Oswald, and he wants to find his parents, feeling very lonely, although Batman, who Bruce Wayne disguises him as, says that Oswald/ Mr. Penguin knows who his parents are.

Christmas Time:

When the movie begins, I realized that it was Christmas time. Gotham City wants to light up a Christmas tree. I noticed that although a bright and supposably cheery event, Gotham still looked pretty much depressing and dark. Of course, there are violence that starts during the festive Christmas season. You see a huge Christmas present decoration open up, and in it, there are explosives. People run for their safety, and Batman saves a woman, and the woman has a crush on him. In the movie, you will also see clowns working along side a villain named Penguin.

An Interesting BackStory of Catwoman also named Selina Kyle:

We get to know of a woman named Selina who works with a wealthy man named Max Schreck. Catwoman learns her ways about him, Max pushes her out of the window, and as she fell on the snowy ground, she looks dead, and her leg is stretched up to her back. Cats come running up to her, and nibble on her fingers, and has a bloody head from when Schreck had pushed her. It kind of reminded me of the scene when Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider. The first cat that runs up to her is a black cat. When those cats bit her, the first one to go is a black cat. When she wakes up, she goes home and destroys her house, then making a superhero kind of suit. She kind of has the aggressive personality of Harley Quinn. When she goes home she says, “honey, I’m home…” and realized that she doesn’t have a significant other. Before she became Catwoman, she still did that.

Catwoman v.s. Batman

Catwoman seems to be a not- so- cheery person as Batman, because he at least tries to be. One day, the same girl that Batman protects in the beginning of the movie, she was attacked again.

Catwoman came into view and went to attack the attacker, but then the other girl. Catwoman sneered and said, “don’t expect Batman coming to save you all the time.” And this left me confused. It seemed like Catwoman was a villain at first, then a hero. It seems like she switches different personalities because she goes mad. And, after she attacks, she does a back flip. Unlike Batman, she goes to more places like a museum, and wrecks everything. The Gotham police tried to stop her, but she runs away. It reminded me of the 1989 scene when the Joker (played by Michael Nicholseon) entered a museum, and played “Party Man” by Prince. At a ball that Catwoman and Batman (Bruce Wayne) attends Catwoman dances with Bruce held by wealthy rich people. She becomes very seductive with him, and kisses him under a mistletoe. Catowoman was like: “that is what you’re supposed to do under a mistletoe.” But then Batman makes a comeback and says, “well kisses are deadlier.” I actually cheered for Batman and laughed.

So here is the Tricky and Serious Part About the Whole Movie I Noticed:

In the movie, when Batman and Catwoman were fighting after the ballroom scene, Catwoman sneered and said along the lines, “What? You are afraid to fight a woman?” I saw that Batman/ Bruce Wayne, did look a little bit uncomfortable with fighting her. It is still the norm now a days that men are wary about fighting with women. I felt for Batman and if he may have thought that.

The Infamous Batmobile and Cave:

In Batman Returns: 1992 Batman OF COURSE uses his infamous Batmobile car. It literally looks like a bat. His car is quite fast, and a lot of people know it would be Batman when he drove in that car. In his wealthy estate, Batman has that infamous cave, too. In this particular movie, Batman (to enter the cave) uses a code by touching something in a fish tank. In other Batman movies (I forget which to be quite frank) he uses a piano for a code, he plays about three simple keys.

Alfred Pennyworth:

Like all other Batman movies and shows, Batman Returns of course has the infamous butler Alfred. Alfred had promised to take care of Bruce after his parents had died, or ehem been murdered. He, in this movie, wore a black suit, and occassionally smoked a cigar….I’m like: “yeah that’s typical Alfred.”

Why I Feel Bad For Batman:

No matter what Batman movies I’ve watched, and different takes, I always felt bad for Batman though he remained strong. People are constantly jealous of his wealth. However, in this movie, I didn’t see the infamous Batman light with his symbol on it.

What I Thought Overall:

Here is what I thought overall: I found it creepy. There were clowns in this movie, working with Penquin/ Oswald. I kept thinking to myself: is the Joker going to be in this movie? Because, every time I see clowns in the Batman universe, I think the Joker is going to pop up. I thought this particular Batman movie was okay. It was quite simple to follow, although at points I got confused, and needed to clarify with somethings, so I looked up sources online for clarification, and I thought: “oh that makes sense now!”

Rating:

I rate this movie a ⅘ star review. I’m going to be watching some more Batman movies and shows and do a report of them here and there! But, I want to still remind you, this was my least favorite Batman’s of them all, nothing beats the 1989 version!
