Hello cat lovers.

Today’s topic is about befriending stray cats in Turkey.

Before approaching a stray cat, you should watch their tail and over-all behaviour. Do they seem interested in you? If yes, let’s get started!

Pet them: Be gentle, do not pet harshly. If they’re an extroverted cat, they will most likely rub their back on your legs and try to jump on your lap. However, some cats are quite shy and might stare back awkwardly. You need to spend a bit more time with those cats. Either way, if they are interested and do not feel threatened, they will appreciate you petting them.

Feed them: You can buy a small bag of cat food from the nearest supermarket. If the stray cat spots the bag in your hand, they will not hesitate to follow you around and meow nonstop until you give them the treasure!

Blink twice, very slowly: This is one of the best ways to let stray cats know you are not dangerous. In animal kingdom, closing your eyes is a sign of weakness. However, cats are purposely blinking twice slowly. In their language, it’s a sign of trust. The message is clear: “I am closing my eyes because I trust that you are not going to hurt me. I will not, either”.

Do not be loud: Stray cats tend to stay away from noise. In fact, almost all cats are built this way. They simply love quietness. Let me give you an example. Have you ever been to a friend’s house who owns a cat? The cat most likely stayed away from toddlers. Because, toddlers are quite loud and move fast. You never know what their next move is going to be. Are they going to cry? Will they just… run? You never know. Most likely, the cat will hide somewhere until the toddler is gone. Usually, the cat will pick the most quiet guest. Sometimes, that guest is you. Most of the time, it’s that one allergic friend who avoids cats. It is very unfortunate, isn’t it? They like to be around people that are “predictable”. Well, now you know they love quiet people. So next time, do not be loud.

Give them some space: If everything else fails, and they simply do not want to be around humans, let them do their thing. Do not push their limits. They might bite or scratch you, which is the last thing you would want from a friend. Friends give each other some space when needed. Do not force them to do something they do not want to do. It is okay to let the furball go.

In fact, they might decide to come back to be your friend, if you stop trying. Let them be. After all, they are free-spirited furballs. 🐾
