The following contains spoilers for Deaddie Du Dead Chapter 3, “White Rabbit,” written and illustrated by Arūnas Murnikovas, available in English from MyFutprint Entertainment. Debuted in Issue #17 Saturday PM.

Deaddie Du Dead Chapter 3 picks up after Yvas dies and is resurrected, thus unleashing his “awakening.” In the previous chapter, he and Alissa team up to destroy the agency and become free, but it won’t be easy as there’s a bounty on Yvas from an underground organization. We find out that when Yvas and Lou were playing “tuku tuku” (hide-and-seek), Lou ran off in chase playfully but a strange man on the street attempts to attack and stab Yvas in a dark alleyway. The man is alerted by a “psycho girl” and that scares him off, disclaiming Yvas “got lucky.” The girl was Alissa, thus sparking the beginning of a friendship. The most important details in this chapter are the development of Yvas and Alissa’s friendship and the challenges they face as they navigate their violent, unusual environment. When they first met as children, Alissa was too shy to introduce herself, but upon saving Yvas, they became friends. When Yvas invited Alissa to join in on their game, she abruptly disclaims that she has to go but Yvas “owes [her] a soda.” 5-years later, Yvas meets Kurt, his mentor, and he is assigned his partner whom we find out to be Alissa. The story then skips ahead 2-years and we find out that Alissa has been working for the agency since she was a child, even back when she first met Lou and Yvas.

In Chapter 3 of Deaddie Du Dead, Yvas and Alissa are on a mission to infiltrate a building and take out a group of low-class assassins. However, things take a turn when they encounter a white rabbit hybrid and a cute girl. The girl seems familiar to Yvas, but he can’t quite place her.

As Yvas and Alissa prepare for their mission, Kurt tells Yvas that he needs to learn to use P.O.N., or Power of Nature. P.O.N. is a boost for the body that can be taken from the environment around it and applied to the muscles. It comes naturally for hybrids, but Kurt tells Yvas that he can’t use it because he doesn’t have his “Awakening.”

Bounty Hunters looking for a good catch

In the mission, as Yvas and Alissa are fighting the assassins on floor 7 and floor 11 respectively, Murnikovas is giving us a fast pace highlighting the quickness of both Yvas and Alissa. However, Yvas is unable to use P.O.N. properly and accidentally bursts through the wall (image above).

Yvas and Alissa are able to successfully complete their mission, but Yvas is still troubled by his inability to control his awakening and seems to only be able to use it when he has no way out, thus prompting unpredictable results. Alissa tells him his ability has conditions, like everyone else, and that she is aware of her conditions so she can use her awakening whenever she pleases (just like “A” and “S” rank assassins). One key tip she gives Yvas: he needs to control his adrenaline.

White rabbit appears again, this time Alissa saying she recognizes them “White rabbit, white rabbit…it sounds so familiar…” This was not quite an action scene, but the stunning visuals, transitions and well-choreographed action scenes by Murnikovas are highlighted even in the ironic cut to Herry recollecting how he remembers the White Rabbit and the Girl, totally disconnected from the location of Yvas and Alissa. Herry remembers that they were headed towards Yvas and Alissa’s location, so he alerts Kurt to send the nearest S-rank assassins to KON13.

The chapter ends with Yvas and Alissa being attacked by the White Rabbit hybrid, whose boss put the bounty on Yvas. Alissa immediately remembers the White rabbit as well and tells Yvas to run. The White Rabbit uses a type of move we’ve never seen in the manga prior to this moment. Then, we’re left not knowing what happens next. The chapter ends on a cliffhanger, with Yvas and Alissa in danger. It’s clear that the White rabbit is just the beginning of their problems.

Overall, I enjoyed Chapter 3 of Deaddie Du Dead. It was a fast-paced and exciting chapter that kept me on the edge of my seat. I’m interested to see how Yvas and Alissa are able to get out of this situation and what the White rabbit’s boss wants with them, and what the girl’s importance is.
